At least once a week i find myself having a conversation with a member about how they don’t know what they would do without the darkroom and it always catches me off guard because i always think i’m the only one that feels that way. Often it’s the amount of money they’re saving developing their own film but usually it ends up circling back to the friends they have made. We’re releasing the Big Class Bundle to provide the resources people need to start developing their own film and join a community of like minded photo nerds. The Big Class Bundle is a voucher that will allow you to register for all of the classes we currently offer anytime between now and September. There’s no time pressure once you have your voucher, you can register for classes at your convenience but the vouchers are only available for $895 until Tuesday May 8, 2018. -Lucia Rollow Founder/Director

This voucher will provide you with a coupon that can be applied to any combination of our existing class offerings not in excess of $1,000. The idea is that you will use this voucher to take all 4 weeks of Intro to B&W Photo one month, Intermediate B&W Printing the next month, and you'll end with Color Printing in the 3rd month.

When you take classes at the Bushwick Community Darkroom you'll be...

  • Learning to load film into camera your camera

    • Bring any 35mm or medium format film camera to the first week and we'll give you a roll of film and show you how to correctly load it into your camera! This is a great resource for those of you that are completely new and those of you that just have a "new" (antique) camera.

  • Learning to expose film

    • For those of you that just need a refresher or the one that's never been exposed to the sunny 16 rule. We'll teach you a few fast and hard tricks for getting good exposures time after time.

  • Learning to develop b&w film

    • This is where it gets fun! Most of the folks that come through the darkroom have not ever actually developed their own film! Why? Because most of them got re-introduced to film through Lomography and color film or just shoot color film for whatever reason and have never had access to any resources. We will not teach you to develop color film in this class but we will teach you to load your b&w film onto developing reels in complete darkness and develop it correctly so you have a negative you can use to make prints over the following weeks!

  • Learning to scan film

    • After you develop your film we'll show you how to scan it using our Kodak Pakon f135 scanners that do a whole roll automatically in 15 minutes. Everyone will be able to see their scans immediately!

  • Learning to print b&w film

    • Next you'll spend 6 weeks in the b&w darkroom, but remember! you have 20 hours of lab time to use developing all the film you'll be shooting in your free time! Over the next 6 weeks you'll be introduced to the b&w darkroom. In the first two weeks you will learn the basics of how to use an enlarger, what chemicals are required and how they should be mixed and stored, as well as how to make a contact sheet and an acceptable resin coated (RC) print. During the following four weeks you will be introduced to Fiber paper and the nuances of more advanced b&w printing techniques. By the end of 6 weeks you should be able to produce a technically perfect b&w fiber print.

  • Learning to print color film

    • Once you're comfortable in the b&w darkroom we'll introduce you to the complete and total darkness of the color darkroom! Here you'll learn to balance Cyan, Magenta and Yellow to produce a color neutral print and how to develop it using our 33" Kreonite color print processor.

  • Credited 20hrs of outside class lab time

    • To be used within 3 months of starting the first class. $300 value - Hours can only be redeemed during open public hours: Mon-Wed 6-9p & Thurs-Sun 12-8p)
