When did you start taking pictures? shooting film? tell us your story!
I've been shooting a mix of digital and film for about 25 years, going through waves. I started with a Canon AE-1 that my uncle, a NYC portrait photographer, gave me in middle school. I stopped working with film for a long time and just got back into it the past 12 months or so. In the short time I've been back in the darkroom it's become an important part of my life, and I guard that time pretty fiercely now!
How do your friends describe your work?
They'd probably say it's evocative of an earlier time in B&W photography -- but that's just cause they're being nice :) I think one thing about my eye that people tend to notice is my pull towards textures. I'm a big sucker for fur coats, bricks, flowers, etc. on the streets of NY!
What's your favorite thing about being a BCD/SHIM member so far? least favorite?
Everyone's incredibly open about themselves -- what they're working on, what they're up to -- there's no gatekeeping, just a group of really supportive folks.
Tell us about the work you're submitting, is this part of a series or a broad sampling? Was all this work done in a short burst or sporadically over years or something else? If this is a series what's the narrative?
This is a broad sampling from the 3-4 months. Right now I'm just shooting and printing as much as I can, trying to work on the craft. I have some more focused projects in mind for this coming spring and summer
