About Us

Bushwick Community Darkroom was born in 2011 when Lucia Rollow turned a tiny basement storage unit in her Bushwick loft building into a DIY film lab. Back then, film was expensive, labs were closing left and right, and if you wanted to develop your own work in Brooklyn — good luck. So Lucia built what she needed: a space for photographers to develop, print, and learn together.

Word spread. What started as a single enlarger in a basement grew into a collective of photographers, artists, teachers, and neighbors. Over the past decade, BCD has moved through a few different spaces, each one bigger and better than the last — always driven by the same mission: keep film accessible, affordable, and alive.

Today, our new space on Himrod St. is home to fully equipped darkrooms, rental stations, workshops for all skill levels, and a growing family of analog nerds who believe that photography is better when it’s shared. Come through — we’re always developing something.
