This Week at BCD

August is here, and so is a make-or-break moment for BCD.

It’s somehow already the middle of August, and honestly, both the city and the darkroom feel pretty quiet right now. I need to share something real with you: I can’t keep this place running on my own. If the community doesn’t truly need it — if people don’t show up for classes, memberships, and events — then we may not be able to keep the doors open much longer.

Lately I’ve had too many conversations that start with “Oh, I didn’t even know you were back.” That’s heartbreaking, because what we need instead are more moments of “I just moved here yesterday and couldn’t wait to join.” That’s the energy that keeps this space alive.

This is a make-or-break moment, but it’s also a chance. If you’ve been thinking about getting more involved — signing up for a workshop, becoming a member, or even just stopping by an orientation — now is the time. Your presence and participation are what will determine whether this space continues to exist for the community.

The good news is that we do have plenty of chances this week to come together and keep the darkroom alive. From learning to develop your own color film, to experimenting with beer as chemistry, to diving into the magic of cyanotype, there are classes and gatherings happening almost every day. If you’ve been waiting for the right time to show up, this is it — not just for yourself, but for the future of the space.

Ever wondered how to bring your color film to life, start to finish? In this hands-on C-41 Color Developing workshop, you’ll learn the complete process of developing your own color negatives at BCD. From mixing chemicals to pulling your first freshly developed roll out of the tank, this class takes the mystery out of color film developing and puts the control in your hands.

No prior experience required — just bring a roll of exposed color film, and we’ll walk you through every step. By the end, you’ll leave not only with your own developed negatives, but also the confidence to keep experimenting in the darkroom.

Event Details:

  • Date: Tuesday August 19, 2025

  • Time: 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM

  • Location: Bushwick Community Darkroom, 334 Himrod Street, Brooklyn, NY 11237

This isn’t your typical photography workshop — it’s part science experiment, part happy hour, and part community hang. We’re mixing film, beer, and good company for a night that’s way more about fun than formality.

Here’s how it works: bring a roll of film and we’ll show you how to whip up a batch of chemistry using beer as the main ingredient (yes, seriously). Then we’ll throw everyone’s rolls together into a group developing session while we hang out, sip drinks, and swap stories. It’s a perfect mix of learning something new and just enjoying the vibe of the darkroom after hours.

No pressure, no pretense — just a chance to see how wild and experimental film photography can get when you step outside the box. Whether you’re curious about alt-process magic or just want an excuse to crack open a beer with some fellow photo nerds, this night is for you.

Don’t drink? We’ve got you covered — plenty of non-alcoholic options will be on hand so everyone can take part.
