Documentary Workshop: The power of the camera to reveal hidden truths

Over the period of five weeks students will construct a photo-based story while exploring the documentary genre of photography. Presentations, group discussions and readings will inspire students to explore new approaches to constructing personal narratives. Students will explore connections between photographer and subject through weekly assignments and critiques. Incorporating audio recordings, interviews and writing is encouraged but not required. The course will be led by Samantha Sutcliffe with additional guest artist Paul Schwartz.

Biography

Samantha Sutcliffe is a visual artist utilizing photography, video, sound and fiction to document the complexities of the U.S cultural landscape. She is a graduate of the Visual Journalism and Documentary Practice Program at the International Center of Photography. Her first series Under the Shadows of… was short-listed for The Hopper Prize and published in the Fotofilmic JRNL 10 curated by Paul Schiek. Her documentary projects have been featured in Atlantic.Rethink, Truth in Photography, Gigantic Magazine, Paper Journal, Musee Magazine and Phile Magazine. She is the recipient of Lucie Foundation Notions of Home Prize, Creatives Rebuild New York, City Corps Artist Grant and Jersey Art Fair Emerging Exhibitors Grant. A recent review of her work can be read in the latest issue of Liminul Magazine www.samanthasutcliffe.com
