Ishmael Claxton, a New York-born photographer now based in Dublin for overa decade, has embraced photography as a profound tool for expression. Knownfor his thought-provoking themes, Ishmael has earned recognition as aprofessional visual artist whose work confronts critical societal issues.Through acclaimed series like Migration/Integration and Capall Gang, heinvites audiences to reflect deeply, using his art as a mirror to anever-changing world.
As a co-founder of the ÍOVA Club, a collective dedicated to elevating thevoices of image-makers, Ishmael has been instrumental in shaping Ireland’sphotography community. The group has organized three Culture Night groupexhibitions and numerous events, including presentations and galleryvisits, fostering collaboration and growth among photographers.
Ishmael’s work has been widely exhibited both in Ireland andinternationally. In 2023 alone, he participated in 39 exhibitions atprestigious venues such as Outset Gallery, 126 Gallery Galway, Rua RedGallery, Carlow Visual, and the Ulster Museum. His portrait of artist SeanHillen was honored in the LensCulture Portrait Choice Awards 2023.Additionally, he played a pivotal role in inaugurating two galleries:Ardgillan Castle Gallery with his Migration/Integration series and RoundRabbit Studios.
His solo exhibitions have further solidified his reputation. In 2022, heexhibited at Gallery X, followed by a show at Round Rabbit in 2023. In2024, he collaborated with conductor Berginald Rash for From Antiquity toModernity, a unique fusion of visual storytelling and live music presentedat the National Concert Hall. That same year, he unveiled Echoes ofElegance: Claxton's Beistegui Ball Exhibition at the Irish GeorgianSociety, recreating the splendor of a 1940s ball.
Ishmael’s accolades include being awarded the Artist-in-Residence programat the Irish Photo Museum, the TLP Book Award for Dead Zoo in Blue(2024), and shortlisting for both the Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize and theRoyal Society of Photography Portrait Award. In 2025, he was selected forthe prestigious Shutter Hub OPEN, an international exhibition showcasing100 photographers and celebrating the future of photography.
